California’s infamous San Andreas Fault is a powerful reminder that the ground beneath our homes is never permanently still. Stress accumulates along locked sections until it is released through earthquakes. The timing of the next major event remains uncertain – but that uncertainty is a reason to prepare now.
For a homeowner, the decisive question is whether the building is ready. If a vulnerable ground storey collapses, everything above it is at risk – and repairing a home can become the task of rebuilding a life.
Buildings with open garages, parking areas or insufficient bracing at ground level can be particularly vulnerable. A “soft storey” has substantially less lateral stiffness than the storeys above it, allowing damaging movement to concentrate at that level.
The time to address that weakness is before the ground starts moving.
At TurnKey-Innovations, we are developing retrofit bracing systems to help existing timber buildings resist earthquake forces through stronger structural connections and supplementary ground anchorage.
The principle is straightforward: connect key structural members with tensioned steel cables, distribute the forces through guide and load-distribution plates, and secure the network to heavy-duty anchors outside or just beneath the building footprint.
A central tension-balancing assembly is designed to distribute forces evenly through the cable network, helping connected components respond together as an integrated unit, with monocoque-like behaviour.
Simple in principle, carefully engineered in application. Cable geometry, pretension, anchorage and the building’s existing strength must work together. Addressing a soft storey requires reinforcement that resists lateral deformation at that level, as well as secure anchorage.
Our development focuses on practical installation in existing homes, with limited intervention wherever possible. Performance is ready to be assessed and verified through engineering analysis and shake-table testing.
We cannot predict when the next major earthquake will strike. We can act on the weaknesses already visible in our buildings.
Strengthen the home you have – before rebuilding becomes the only option.
